Young Arts Arizona - The Thoughtful Warrior

The Thoughtful Warrior Program at Maricopa County Sherriff's Office

Thoughtful Warriors in the Maricopa County juvenile jail system define themselves through fundamentals and goals for life lived thoughtfully and with purpose. Literature, breathing, movement, art making, dialogue, and writing are means to see and honor themselves and others.

  • Considering what I want to leave in my past and what I want to see in my future Identifying qualities I respect in others and symbols that represent them
  • Learning about fundamentals and the power of choice in my life, day by day, step by step
  • Connecting through the world around me through art and cultural artifacts – old and new
  • Creating to explore, discover, express – honoring myself and others
  • Moving through the lows and highs to find balance, relieve stress and find joy in myself and others

Initial curriculum design by Judy Butzine and Melanie Ohm, co-directors of the Cultural Arts Coalition. Ongoing program design and development by Melanie Ohm, program director and president of Concepts Consulting Group, and Deborah Salac, Arizona Commission on the Arts roster artist. Program sponsored by the Maricopa County Sherriff's Office. Young Arts Arizona Ltd. exhibits this artwork of juvenile inmates in gallery venues in the Maricopa County court system. There it is seen by tens of thousands of people per year.
